The Black Dahlia was the name given to an "actress" / prostitute named Elizabeth Short in Hollywood in the 1940s. She disappeared from her usual haunts and was found murdered. It was apparent from the condition of her body that she had been tortured, perhaps for several days, before being killed. Her body had been cut in half at the waist and her mouth had been slashed from ear to ear. She had also been sexually mutilated. The crime remains unsolved. The name "Black Dahlia", by the way, came from her jet black hair and her habit of wearing a black dahlia at all times.

I've been wondering that myself. And, if it's California's most notorious unsolved crime - how do they know what happened for the movie? (Assuming the movie tries to explain what happened.)
