I have noticed a general distatse on the site for kids looking for "quick fix" answers to questions by going on the Yahoo answers website. My feeling is the best way to help kids on this site is to give them additional resources, and have them research the answers for themselves. I'm even thinking of creating a resource webpage if I 1) can't find a site that already fills this need, and 2) get some really good resource websites. If you had to pick one good website for the subject you or your child has the most problems with, what would it be?

I'm not that great at scienc so I'll pick a science resource site.

Kathy Wollard has written some funny and interesting books that help kids answer science questions such as Why do Leaves Change Color? I used this site a great deal in one of my classes.

I see a lot of questions from kids about the following:

1) word definitions, usage and etymologies - Dictionary.com is usually helpful and also offers a thesaurus option and foreign language dictionary options
2) a lot of algebra questions, especially solving a problem with multiple variables - Cosme.com is sponsored by the Discovery Channel and looks good, although I've not personally used it but it has assistance by grade and with multiple math areas: algebra, geometry, data analysis, etc.
3) ideas for projects or papers - I don't know of one specific site, but if you go into Goodsearch.com and search under "school project ideas" there are multiple links based on school subject and grade. Goodsearch.com is powered by Yahoo! Search and has the advantage that when you use it you can select a school or charity of your choice to receive a monetary donation each time to perform a search.

One good thing would be somehow to force the kids to seek answers from resources EXCLUDING the Internet. Things like almanacs, dictionaries, atlases, and libraries are quite foreign to most of today's students.

Chow!!

Why not create a forum (outside of this one) where kids can come to you for answers.
