i read it and liked it ,but most people skim it and it has become such an icon and touchstone you can't be candid lest you be branded a infidel by the "true believers"-lol

I still have my copy from the late 70's or early eighties. Back then it was very easy to view the contrasts that the author described because it was the time of its writing, I'm not sure how it is deciphered today given that conservativism has posed itself as all virtueous and morally superior.
Back then escaping to find your person meant achieving freedom from drudgery of everyday conformist pressures. It was what made travel outdoors in the elements on a motorcycle romantic and appealing. Today that course has been reversed through fear mongering and the elective applications that raise fear under the banner of 'the war on terrorism' .
If it still fits in 2006 then it is becoming an American underground classic.

I read it many years ago.
I enjoyed it through most of the book- but then it got really scary as he started going insane.
