Check out the meat puppets. They are nothing like Nirvana's music, but were a big influence to them. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden are comprable as well, although more metal.

Silverchair was like them back in the day. Foo fighters is a little more pop than grunge, but you still have the essential members of Nirvana. Filter was good for a similar sound.

My mom went to college with Kurt Cobain and she likes the music. She's a real fan of Tool, Alice in Chains, Disturbed... A lot of Alternative.
