mostly to learn about your major. but if for people who are majoring in music, dance, art, etc. need to know "alot" about their major. eg. they need to already know how to play the piano. but for most majors you don't have to know anything although is doesn't hurt to have some general knowledge. you start with introductory classes (usually 100 or 200 level) and then progress on to other courses.

If you already knew alot about your major then there would be no
need to go to college.
