The very first sign of anger is elevated breathing. So it makes sense that "controlled breathing" would do more than just control the lungs, it would to some extent control the emotions.
Just think of it as a form of relaxation of "letting go of stress." If you have trouble with this, go to Hastings, Barnes & Nobles or Books-a-Million and go to their Books on CD section. They have lots there that will aid you in learning techniques such as this. Also, if you have a Hypnotherapist in town, as if they sell audio-tapes or cd's of such a lesson.
Good luck!

They would help you put some distance between the impulse and the action. If you feel like lashing out, but then use the breathing and muscle relaxing technique, it gives you time to calm down.

The two work together to ease tension in your mind and body. When a person gets angry, they usually act before they think.Which leads to doing or saying something that they will regret later. When angry we hyperventilate, losing oxygen to the brain.(Unclear thoughts).Slow deep breaths (In through nose)(Out of mouth)gets rid of the toxins that are inside, which in turn supplies clean oxygen to the brain so our thinking can become clearer.Meditation is the same as muscles relaxing.Get in a peaceful place with maybe some soothing music, lie on your back, close your eyes, start breathing slow deep breaths in nose, out mouth, concentrate on relaxing each muscle in your body.Start with the feet, ankles, calves, thighs, hips, pelvis, stomach, chest, neck, face, triceps, shoulders, fingers, hands, forearms, biceps. Each part.Work your way up to relaxing your brain. You may even go to sleep as you do this, but that is fine. After you wake up just start over from the beginning. It takes a little time to catch on to how it's done so don't get angry and give up.

For one you are already making the decision to calm down. Next you are focusing all that energy into something positive. It also takes time to relax.

They take your autonomic nervous system out the the "fight or flight" mode and put you into the "breed and feed" mode, in other words, calm you down by removing the adrenalin rush you get from anger.
