Well, your options are limited. Bedford is a tiny place, and you can't really commute from Boston proper in 30 minutes. You can look around the Arlington / Cambridge line - East Arlington may be your best bet since Cambridge is going to be a good deal more expensive. But either way your definitely looking at having roommates. It's either that or you would have to head north of Bedford, and you don't want to do that. You could also try West Somerville, but it don't know it as well as the area around the Arlington / Cambridge line.
In the area I mentioned your only a couple miles from Harvard Square in Cambridge, and there are a decent number of restaurants, etc. in the area. You can also walk to the Alewife "T" station and get anywhere from there. A lot of younger people in the area, but it is a "dry" town. At least I think it still is? That just means no liquor stores or liquor sold in restaurants (BYOB). And you can go straight up "mass ave" to Bedford. Or some other route depending on where in Bedford your job is. My office was in Bedford when I was living in East Arlington, and I HATE commuting.
Hope that helps, and good luck with the new job and move!

Put Bedford on a map, living anywhere south of Waltham could be a real hit or miss commute. I recently was stuck on route 128, which becomes 95 North, forever, and it literally took an hour to move one mile. Try the MBTA.com website for commuting options, buses, subway and commuter rail. The towns around Bedford can be pretty pricey, and don't have many renting options, Billerica may be affordable, but is places you even further away from Boston. Medford is a middle class town close to Boston and more affordable, you should be commuting against the traffic as you'd be going east to west away from Boston. Your best advice could come from a coworker at your new job, as they really would know the lay of the land and the commute.

Craig's List is a good place to look. (boston.craigslist.org) For $600-$900 you'll need to get a roommate. The average price of a one bedroom if you want to be in or around the city is about $1,000. Occasionally you might luck out and find somewhere a little cheaper, but that's not the norm. Downtown prices can be up to $1800 for a one bedroom regular apartment. I would say check out cities like Cambridge, Somerville, or Brighton. They are all close to the city, but a little cheaper than being downtown, and all well within the 30 minutes you're looking for to travel. They also are great cities for younger people and have tons of bars, restaurants, etc. I'm sure you'll love it!

My sister just found a 2 room apt. in Somerville inc. util. for $1200 a month and that is a DEAL.
Boston has over 100,000 students, so there are lots of folks your age.
Bedford is not a small town in the classic sense. More like a suburb.
Allston/Brighton or Somerville would be the most affordable.
Back Bay and Brookline the most expensive.
