Knots is nautical miles per hour.

You need to convert nautical miles to meters (this may mean first converting nautiocal miles to statute miles, then satute miles to meters). You then need to convert hours to seconds. The result is meters per second.

So with a quick look at wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautical_mile
we find that 1 nautical mile is 1852 meters, so 54 nautical miles per hour is (54 * 1852) meters per hour, or 100,008 meters per hour.

Next we calculate the number of seconds in an hour, which is 60 seconds per minute times 60 minutes per hour, or 3600 seconds per hour.

Finally we divide the number of meters travelled per hour by the number of seconds in an hour to get meters per second:
100,008 / 3600 = 27.78 meters per second.

If you need to show units -- you usually do-- this is then an issue of:

(1) Express knots as nautical miles per hour
54 kts = 54 nmi / hour (kts is short for knots, nmi is short for nautical mile)

(2) multiplying nmi/hour by meters/nmi to get meters per hour
54nmi/hour * 1852m/nmi = 100008m/hour (the nmi's cancel out)

(3) dividing meters per hour by second per hour to get meters per second
100008m/hour / 3600sec/hour = ?

remember that to divide by a fraction, you multiply by the inverse (upside-down) fraction, so

100008m/hour * 1hour/3600sec = 27.78 m/sec (hours cancel out)

the knot is a unity of speed, one knot = one seamile per our.
one seamile is exactly defined as 1852 meter, one knot is therefore a speed of 1,852 kilometers per our.
so 54 knots would be 1,852 multiply by 54 = 100,008 km/u
in the early days, they threw off a block of wood from the ship,at the back, with a rope attached to it,with at every 47 feet and 3 inches a 'knot'..,one would take time of 28 seconds, while another would count the knots,so they would know how fast they go.

54 knots is 28 m/s( this is rounded up) if you want to know the exact speed then:

knts divided by 1.9438445= m/s

a knot is a nautical mile per hour
a nautical mile = 6080 feet
54 knots = (54*6080) feet per hour
328,320 feet per hour
60 secs per min, 60 mins per hr
3,600 secs per hour
328,320 feet per 3,600 secs =
(328,320/3600) feet per sec
91.2 feet per sec
1 ft = 30 cm
(91.2*30) cm/sec
2,736 cm/sec
27.36 metres per sec
