You definitely need to be a good listener. You'd also have to be patient and nonjudgemental no matter what.

compassion for hurting people.understanding,concern,kindness.insight into people's problems, good problem-solving skills, experience in some of the same life situations.if you haven't been through any of the same things, you'll have a hard time understanding, why people do some of the things they do.you'll need to seperate the person from their behaviors,to be able to help them.don't treat them like a victim, that will just enable them to stay sick.treat them like, yes, they have gone through a lot of suffering.but they can't let that determine the rest of their life.and if they mistreat other people, because of their illness, you'll need to confront them about that, too.don't let them take advantage of you,and try to make you feel sorry for them.a lot of people who go to counselors, like to ''use the system,''because they really don't wanna get well.by manipulating the counselor, they keep themselves sick.because they get the counselor to treat them like a victim.also,a very, very important thing.you need to seperate your professional life, from your personal life.don't allow people's problems to worry you to the point, where you can't enjoy your personal life.at work, you have a life,a professional life.but at home, you have a different life.a personal life.your professional life, should never start to interfere with your personal life.
also, try to understand, that people coming to a counselor, are very troubled people.they'll all have different mental health diagnoses, that will make some of them difficult to deal with.try to understand, that certain symptoms will manifest themselves with certain patients, making things very problematic at times.i would suggest, that when you become a counselor,to learn from other counselors.talk to them, ask them what's helped them to be successful,in this particular line of work.and read up on psychology, read books that talk about what makes a good counselor.i hope this helps.good luck to you.it's nice that you want to be a good counselor.some people just do it for the money.but there are some really good, caring people who do it,because they want to help people.i hope you'll be one of them.
