The earth, the sun and the moon already have proper names. They are Terra, Sol and Luna respectively. Those names are not new. They have been around for a long time. That is where we get words like "Terrestrial" or "Terranian" or "Solar" or "Solstice" or "Lunar".
We put the article "the" in front of the generic terms, earth, sun and moon to indicate that there is only one. For example, if you say "the man", you are talking about only one man out of many, but that man does have a name, and it is not "man".
We have always referred to the moon as "the moon" and we always will. You can do quite well in your life without ever knowing the moon's name. But to be correct, the moon's name is "Luna".

Actually Hussyman2003 is right. Any smaller body that revolves around a planet is called a natural sattelite. I guess they just named it the moon. If I wanted to call it anything else, I woudn't. (well that statement made alot of sense...) 'Moon' is fine with me.

Because if we change the name now, say to Big Yeller or something we'll have to change all those naked butt jokes. You'd have drunken college students driving by, poking Big Yeller out the windows. You'd have bleachers full of rowdy fans at ball games exposing Big Yellers when the cameras went by. Worst of all, you'd ruin all those bedtime stories and nursery rhymes - Big Yeller is made of green cheese, the cow jumped over Big Yeller......where will it all end?????

The sun is called Sol, so maybe the moon should have a name.
I'm sure it has a number designation.

any time ones name starts with "The", he has respect. (ie."The Donald", "The Lohan", "The Who", "The Doors", The Man, The Bomb, The Sh*t)
"The moon" works for me.
