Because it is run buy the government, Who can't manage money or anything else. They just get throwing money at problems and when they run out they raise your taxes. I work for they state of NY mental health as a contractor, the waste of money is unbelievable.

Probably the same reason the Government pays $2,000 for a hammer, and the Hospitals charge $18.00 for a single dose of Tylenol---cause they can get away with it!!!!!!

It's called "overhead." The prisoner himself costs mere pennies to keep alive and comfy, but all the other things required to keep him a prisoner are quite costly.

To Brooke's list,may I add cleaning, laundry, library and sports facilities, cinema. TV and other indoor recreation, lawyers visits, medical attention, etc?

care. I am sure they have better food than a lot of

thats a damn good question. i have a family of four and we make under 30k and we get by so that really doesnt make any sence. i think they just like to get more money than they need thats like offices saying they spent 500$ on a box of 100 pencils doesnt make sence to me

Suggest you ask the liberals who insist on inmate rights, and force the state to pay these huge amounts for locking them up.

This is an excellent question. I think too many dollars are spent on the luxuries for criminals too.
