It means that they need some space.
It also means that 1) they are either trying to find a way to break up with you without actually breaking up with you, or 2) they are still into you but are struggling with their current situation.

The answer to this reminds me of a song by Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks. The tune's title was: "How can I miss you if you won't go away?" Put plainly, when we really love someone, sometimes it is possible to suffocate them with our constant presence. It is helpful, therefore, to step back and allow the other person some time to himself. Sent with a big hug and a smile from Chris in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A. (I am 63 years old.)

Normally it means it's over, but after a few weeks there'll realise they F*#ked up, and do all they can to get you back. I'd avoid - a leopard never changes it's spots

I think that it means that your getting to close to someone, and they'd like to have some room. OR, if it pertains to dating, it probably means that you being overbearing. (eg, calling them every night, or, being accusing if they look/talk to another person, or making them tell you everything they do.)

99.9% of the time it means that the person don't want to be with you anymore. then the other time it means that they just need a little me time.
