I think the main thing is to research the place you want to get your body mods done. They should have an autoclav to sterilize equipment. Everything should be opened infront of you, inks for tattoos should be poured into individual "wells".
I had my eyebrow pierced, and they marked off the piercing location with an ink pen. Then they used forcepts to hold the skin. They used a hollow needle to pierce the skin and thread the jewlerly through. It was a very quick and pretty painless process.
The piercer and tattoo artist should give you instructions on how to care for your body art. Check the place out before you have anything done, make sure everything is clean and sterilized. Talk with past clients and review the artists' work. Most places will have a book of photographs that showcases each artists' work.

I think tattoos are beautiful. The first time you get a tattoo, it's very nerve recking, cause you don't know what to expect, it really doesn't hurt. The first ten minutes of that tattoo when they are outlining it you will feel, but after that it goes kind of numb. After they are done with the tattoo they will bandage it, so you will need to leave the bandage on for at least two hours, then you can remove it. you should keep the tattoo clean by washing it with mild soap, and lubricated by using some ointment like neosporin a few times a day, which will help it heal. You will feel it become very itchy when it starts to peel, but don't scratch, because you can damage the tattoo, just keep it moist with the lubricant. As far as the piercing on the lip, it just stings real quick, then feels numb, just keep it clean and it will be alright. If you do remove the ring for any reason, and want to keep that piercing make, sure to put the ring back in immediately, cause the hole will close quick within hours.

Tattoos seem to be more permanent (costly laser surgeries to get rid of) then piercing (if it's a small hole, just taking out the jewelry will take care of it). It also depends on your taste. Do you find piercing more appealing or tattoos. A lot of people get tattoos to represent something they like or means something to them.
In any case, all you need to know is that check out either your tattoo parlor or piercing place and see if their materials (needles in particular) are brand new or sterilized at least so that you don't get any infections or diseases (like hepatitis or worse).
And I think if you are under 16, you need parental consenting.
Other than that, well have fun with whatever you choose.
Tattoos: group of needles piercing your skin rapidly (up to 150 times a second) to deposit ink under the first layer of your skin.
Piercing: some places will become very sensitive after a piercing.
In both case, beware of possible infections and allergic reactions.

One thing that seriously came to my mind is when you get older it may look weird to have a scar from the piercing. You never know your lip ring could get caught on something and rip. You also need to be careful where you put your tatoo because of later on, it might stretch or sag. You never can tell.

when you get a tatto make sue you really love what you are going to get, I have 5, 2 on back,1 arm,1foot, 1stomach, the one on my back hurt the most it feels like some one is scapping you with a knife that has heat to it ,but your body will start to numb so the pain wont be so bad, piercing not bad at all the mouth area heals faster than any area just keep some antiseptic mouthwash with you to rinse with to help healing buy a purse size and dillute it with water so it wont be so strong

A tattoo is made by a tiny needle moving faster than a sewing machine poking thousands of tiny holes past the first layers of your skin. The holes are filled with ink. Make sure you find a reputable artist who keeps a clean shop and wears gloves. Visit several different parlors.

Know what you want and where on your body you want it. A small tattoo won't take long and its not that painful. Piercing is very quick and it is done. They will tell you how to care for it. I have both.

Having it done is nothing but an indication that you have too much money and want to waste some, and you don't really want to out in public (which means your job choices are limited).
Or, to put it another way, why would you want that done? It's stupid. It opens you up to infection also.

as for the tatt.. it hurts like heck.. but don't let that stop you. you will get use to the pain and you wont feel it anymore as for the facial piercing be careful and think about it carefully before you do it.. when you take it out it will leave you with a little dimple and to be honest i think its looks bad and not worth the sneers...
