To deliver it in the direct way I suppose, sometimes people get frustrated when you try to dodge their questions using the roundabout way.

Just get it over with. The longer you wait, the more you dread it, and the worse you feel. Just do it quickly, like ripping off a band-aid.

make sure the person is comfortable and calm, then say I need to tell you some upsetting, then out with it right off or their stress level will rise very quickly wondering why you are not getting to the point...
