I know most people don't care and bath the baby ASAP but I work on Labor and Delivery and had a patient want to wait 24hrs to let the vernix soak in. Any ideas?

Leving the vernix on helps moisturize the skin and protects it against infection after birth. It should not be taken off the skin, rather it should be allowed to absorb naturally into the skin.

My second was born in a hospital and we asked to skip the bath. It absorbed into her skin in most places within an hour of birth. There were some areas that still had vernix for about a week or two afterward.

Warmth is the only reason I can see. usually they get the vernix off immediately after birth. Like a previous poster said its really to protects the baby's skin from the amniotic fluid.

I don't think that it needs to stay on. This is what protects the baby's skin from the amniotic fluid.
