distributor cap. i turn it, and it finally catches..turns on, but like i said turns off when i throw it into drive. what in the distributor cap might effect this, i can tell its nothing serious but simple enough to fix, but cant put my finger on it. Help anyone with info. 1984 chevrolet 350. nothing special.

Take off the cap, and inspect the rotor and points. If they are burnt, replace both. This will cause the exact symptom.
Also, check the vacuum hoses, be sure they are connected, and not loosing vacuum.
Also check the carburetor is bolted down tight, not loosing vacuum.
Check those things first.
Then check fuel filter, and fuel pump.

Burnt points, or loss of vacuum will cause that problem.
