Is it a highschool dance you have to celebrate the first football game on your home field?

Yes, You are correct. It is a party (or dance) usually with a bonfire (we used to burn a mannequin dressed as are rival team but I don't think they do that anymore for obvious reasons) to celebrate your team and the return of students. During the dance the homecoming King and queen are chosen. Usually the dance is squeduled so that the football team will play its rival team. (and hopefully win)

It's the biggest game of the year where you celebrate your team. The local school here usually has a week of activities: a bonfire, small carnival, parade, football game, and a dance afterwards.
