no, no, no
this is not maths sweetie
its supposed to come from your heart!!!!
either one can come first, as long as you are proud of what you do and it comes from your soul,
personally i start with words, cos i cant play any instruments im not very musical, im more lyrical - i want to be a writer
but there is no right or wrong
its a feeling, go with it!!!!

I'd go with a bunch of these chickas' answers...go from your heart! And like that songwriter said, "you shouldn't stay stuck on just one song of a long time"....it'll become crap after a day or two. Go with your emotions and feelings. Brainstorm. Great music comes from deep down in your soul...bring out the best in yourself.
There shouldn't be a specific "songwriting process". I think that what ever you feel and think would sound right for YOUR song. Not what everyone else thinks! Take Joss Stone & Norah Jones for example....such great lyrics! But, songwriting is not just lyrics, you know? The sound/music completes the package.
Starting on a new song...you ALWAYS start from scratch, but that's the beauty of it! You go with your gut feelings!...Not to be wierd or anything, but take Pheobe (from Friends)....what she does is make up the words WHILE making the music...then writes them down when she's found "something". You could do that, too....I know a bunch of musicians who do it that way.
Do you play an instrument? Piano, guitar, bass guitar? That would help a bunch, too! You may want to speak to a music teacher in your town or get inspiration from your local bands. Do it YOUR way, and how you feel. That's the magic of music! ^_^
Hope this helps. =)

It can be either way. You can think of lyrics first and then develope the music later, or you can come up with a tune and then think of words to go with it. It's all up to you and what you're writing.

I am a singer/songwriter. and that isn't even how it begins. when you write a song, you don't sit down and think, "okay, i am going to write a song, or i'll never get up from here." no, it naturally comes to you. i don't know how to explain it. if you're feeling some emotion, sometimes words will just come to you. never try to write a full legnth song all at one time, or trust me, it won't be a good songs. only pop stars who have peeps write songs for them do that. that's why those pop stars only are famous for a day.

Find the sound you like first! Then let the words work with it.
