The Democrats and Wig party were mainly the Southerners
and the Republicans were for the Northerners.

However, those Democrats are nothing like what they have become today.

Union=republican, Abe Lincoln was a republican. The south/confederates were democrats.

Northerners were generally Republican, but the Democrats and Republicans of those days have nothing but a name in common with their modern counterparts. Lincoln AND Davis would roll over in their graves if they could see us today!
