strange that everyone picks Automatic for the People. I guess it's for Everybody Hurts which is one of the most irritating songs now that it's been misinterpreted and played to death.
I would say: New Adventures in Hi-Fi. Truly outstanding vocal moments and enough variety to listen to time and again. Although I am quite taken with Life's Rich Pageant. Gah - can't decide!!! ok - i'll stick with New Adventures in Hi-Fi. First choice has to be right!
REM rock!!!

Best would have to be something from the IRS years.
Partly because this was the time when the band made no concessions to showbusiness, plugging bands like Black Flag on prime-time TV, and insisting on live vocals on TV shows where bands were expected to mime.
But mainly because the lyrics and music were equally mysterious, and (like they all say) evocative of a rural America that never really was.
So...MURMUR is arguably their most important release. But FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION is the one I find most fascinating.
