Do you think we should have a response ready today? Or should we just casually reply? What should we say in the message? How would the knowlege that alien life exists elsewhere in outer space affect us? I'm thinking they would contact us by radio or light waves. Is there another way?

That's an interesting question. What would we say?

First off, I believe it would be very unlikely that they would speak English - but then again, their technology would be leaps and bounds ahead of ours. If not, mathematrics in the form of diagrams and formulas would definately let them know thay have at least discovered another intellegent life form.
From there, it would just be a matter of finding common ground to communicate with - perhaps compring pictures, colors, numbers, etc... with each language to create a kind of alien to English dictionary.
Given the level of technology required to actually contact us - I would choose my words and replies carefully.

Sure, Yahoo Answers. Where else would they go to find out more about us? It's not just the federal government that watches what you are saying.Because so many seem to have little or no respect for them, more than likely that's what you'll get.You might be missing a few body parts but at least there will be something left to bury. Some way or another they would figure out a way. Especially if they've been here since 1947. Anyone that can conquer space flight should be able to figure out anything else. So camping out in the wilderness might not be a very good idea regardless. But who knows what the near future holds for all of us anyway. Enjoy your sitcoms and your sci-fi for now. Here's an interesting site if you haven't seen it yet. And underneath it is another to compare it with for giggles.

It depends on how they contact us. I usually like to establish intentions, motives, and missions first. Then I verify those claims. Frankly, we should accept whatever we see, AND whatever we don't see. For now, we don't see aliens, so we should accept that they are not part of our reality. IF we do see aliens, then we should quickly accept whatever we saw.

The problem with having a pre-prepared response ready is that is not authentic and therefore easily judged us fake and disrespectful. Since we can only interface with the world with our seven senses, those would be the only methods by which they could contact us, namely: air pressure, EM waves, aeromatic chemicals, culinary chemicals, and tactile messages. If we react rationally, then we will wisely gather sufficient information for a wise course of action and if they are also rational then they will respect that.

We are here to observe, not communicate. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species and your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

Many people believe contact has already occurred. Betty & Barney Hill, for instance. Their reply to the aliens was definitely not casual. There are many reported alien contacts.

If I was contacted, my reply would most likely be " got hiney wipe?" because it would probably scare the **** out of me.

Land a space ship in our front yard? I would think they were more advanced than us. I mean they are here we are not there.
I would say take me with you. Beem me up.

Kill them all and steal their space ships. Why should we treat them any differently from anyone else?
