Probably clogged with viruses and spyware.
Assuming you have Win XP Service Pack 1 or 2 - but the following advice is good for all Windows versions since Win98.
Do the following, in this order:
- run a decent antivirus e.g. Stinger
- run Disk Cleanup to delete trash and make some space
- deinstall any programs you don't use or don't remember installing
- remove all programs from Startup that you don't want e.g Messengers, RealPlayer etc. (these all use memory and slow boot time). Do this via System Tools->System Information utlity, then click Tools->System Configuration Utility and click 'Startup' tab. You will be amazed how much junk you find.
- reboot
- run Spyware-S&D
- run HijackThis. Remove any hostile registry keys. Leave things you're not sure of. Mark safe things as 'Ignore'. Make a registry backup before making any changes.
- reboot
- run Scandisk to detect any bad sectors on the disk
- run disk Defrag
- reboot
- install rollup of Windows patches (via windows update)
- reboot
- install SpywareBlaster, to prevent spyware reinstalling. Download latest protections and enable them all.
- run a utility like Registry Compressor 2.0 (free 30-day trial, well worth buying) and schedule it to run regularly (at least once a month).
- reboot
- if the computer is not 10x faster by now, then use System Restore to rollback your registry to a known-good date.
Then redo all of the above.

Try defragmenting your computer. It's easy and you'll find the instructions in the Accessories program. Also, be sure to install spy ware from a reputable company such as Webroot. Their website will give you easy to follow directions.
I hope you have good virus protection installed.
If your computer is getting old, do not spend money on upgrading it because it is seldom totally successful. Just get a new one.

IF i were you, I would ask the people in www.download.com.
They helped me when i emailed them about something wrong with my laptop. Plus how much software do you have? do you have the case where you get 100 pop ups when you are online... if so, you may have a trojan, spyware, and a virus. I strongly suggest you get a spyware scan and email the good people at www.download.com. To do this, you just put your story in "spyware horror stories" and they give you such good feedback that you'll be happy.
