I have a wooden barn with wooden animals and people that was made for my great great great grandfather when he was a child. What I want to know is.... is there a way to date the wood used to make the barn and all the pieces to it. Any help would really be appreciated.

You can send it to a lab for carbon dating. But that will still give only a range of time not an exact date. Do you know the time when your great great great grandfather received it and from whom? If you did that would be a good start. Try going to an antique dealer who specializes in doll houses and or folk art. Good luck.

Seems that if you added 50 or 60 years to the date your great great great grandfather was when he was a child, you would get pretty close.Besides carbon dating, there is no other answer. Counting rings on trees only tells you how old the tree was when it was cut,not how old a piece of lumber was.

can count rings in a tree (after you cut it down) but not in chunks of wood. But you could try an expert at this and they might have a clue as how to do it. You could try carbon dating though I'm not sure how exact thati s and f your stuff isn't fossilized, I'd suggest someone who specializes in handicrafts and stuff. Sometimes, you can guess the age from the style of carving and paint and stuff. A person who works on wood by hand might help.

I learned this in Girl Scouts and Science class count the rings. This is for trees you would have to cut a tree horizontally remove the piece and you would see rings, count each ring and it would give you the age of the tree. For toys you would have to get it appraise I would not recommend that you cut it, might loose it's value.
