The first answerer brings up an interesting point: is egoistic self reflection the same as the absence of self loathing or hatred. Certainly belief plays and important role in the direction of positive emotions. What belief would a person have to not hate themselves. We are by nature perfectionistic and being imperfectable humans we would be unavoidably self critical. That's why cleansing religions that declare forgiveness or offer a concept of perfection are attractive to humans generally. This gives a means that people can conceive themselves positively, and sometimes positively imperfect. "Positively imperfect", that's an ambiguity requiring a renewal of faith where as a religion that declares a perfection absolute have no need for renewal for faith in self worth to God (the egotistical religious fanatic). A religion that declares all humans as equal in their imperfection, that all are imperfect, has firmer ground for intellect but lacks the extremity of the self-righteous egotist, the perfect self conceiver, belief absolute. The scientific who accept the imperfect equality in humanity, equal as all are imperfect, but rejects unsubstantiate fiction, accepts self as changing and forever changable, betterment the perpetuable goal or purpose.

The reason most people are unhappy is because they are naturally perfectionistic and can not accomplish the ego ideals offered from society (TV). I guess that's the reason reality TV is becoming popular; because imperfections are allowed to present themselves.

Because they feel they are not needed.
Our parents were the first generation who literally were not "needed" in the home. Just "wanted".
Wanted, isn't enough for most people.
All people are needed and those who don't know it should go find WHERE they are needed right now!
