I'm going to Jouchi Daigaku (Sophia University) this year and I'm leaving in a week. I'm wondering what I'll need aside from the obvious. I spent some time in Japan when I was in High school, and in Japanese high school I needed a Uniform, a pencil carrier, a lunch box, and slippers (sandals really.) I don't knwo that anyone who's reading this just happens to go to that school, but my dormitory is called nishi kokubunji and I'm a foreignor so I'm assuming my classes will all be in the faculty of liberal arts at the yotsuya campus, if that makes a difference. I'm wondering especially about the slippers, because when I was last in Japan, in Osaka it would be really rude to wear my regular shoes inside of some places, but not others and I always needed someone else to tell me when I needed them. Help? Other advice?

I have never heard of wearing slippers at Sophia University. You are probably be going to go to the Ichigaya campus where they wear shoes inside the building. It is not like high school where you have to change into slippers. Everyone walks around in their street shoes. I really don't know about your dorm. If you really need anything you can purchase them at the next station Kokubunji which has larger stores or in Kichijoji (which is on the same Chuo line) which is a fairly larger shopping area. Or go to a 100 yen shop and buy everything for 100 yen. I think there is not much in Nishi-Kokubunji.

Sophia is not like a high school at all. No uniforms. The Yotsuya campus is right in the middle of the city and most of the buildings are high-rises. The area is surrounded by shops, restaurants, bars, etc., and you can walk to Akasaka or (if you have good legs) even Shinjuku. I'd say you just need to get ready to have a blast!

Hi there! I graduated from Sophia University in the late 1980s!!!!! I went to Ichigaya campus and everything was taught in English. I do not know much about Yotsuya campus but I can tell you this: the dormitory that I stayed was very "westernized". It was a girl's dorm though. They even had European nuns to look after us.
Good luck with you. If you have more questions email me.
