Ok, well I am trying to find out the absolute cheapest way to go from State College, PA to Lynchburg, VA. Buses and trains are obsurd as well as airline tickets. Then it dawned on me...why not use a rental car? I check prices and they are as cheap as $17/day and I only need it for the weekend. But then arose another dilema...I swore I remembered hearing from somewhere that rental cars can only be taken so many places and not out of state but I am not sure.
I really hope someone knows the answer!
P.S.- If they cant be taken out of state then would anyone happen to know how I could make a round trip under $200?

Damn...would being 18 pose a problem for renting one? I really am just looking for the cheapest way to get there and back.
I wasnt aware that they pay you per mileage as well...grr, this is so frustrating.
And yes...the game today was very upsetting...

Rental cars can be taken out of state, but I am guessing the rate you have in your question is for local only.
You have to tell the rental company you want to take the car out of state. You also can usually pay a little more up front for unlimited mileage. In the long run, it will be cheaper if you are driving to Virginia. With the $17/day you would probably go over your allotment and then have to pay a penalty per mile over.
For a weekend, you should be able to rent the car for around $200. You will probably need more or at least a credit card though, as most rental companies reqiure a deposit of some type.

I recently went to several rental car websites. I am from Texas, but live in Delaware and want to drive down there for a visit. I have never heard of a rental car business not letting you take the car out of state. Most of the sites I went to had unlimited mileage unless you drove out of a certain zone. If you drove beyond that zone you were only allowed so many miles a day. Other than that there were no restrictions as to where you could drive. Go with a major company like Hertz or Enterprise as opposed to a locally owned company. The major ones also offer one way rentals.

When I used to rent from Enterpise they would always ask which states I would be driving in, and for some reason they would note it on the contract. All the other agencies don't care as long as the car doesn't leave the country without permission.

You can absolutely take the car anywhere, but possibly not for the cheapest price you mentioned. Also, they usually won't rent a car to someone under the age of 25 for insurance reasons. They will ask you where you plan to drive, and its best to tell the truth, because if you are in an accident, your contract could be voided if you are not where you said you would be placing you responsible for all repairs, even if the accident was not your fault.

It depends on the rental car company and their policy. Check online at yahoo travel and if you book a car reservation through them you can look at the details of the contract on line.
I've rented many times and driven through other states that were authorized by the contract, and other times, some companies have limited the usage.
You basically have to check with the rental car company at the specific location you want to rent from.

Some of the national companies do let you take rentals out of state, but never out of the country. I know this for a fact: I rented a van and it was taken across the country. The rental was from enterprise.

Yes the can be taken out of state.
It's best to tell this to the people your renting from. I don't think they really care where the car goes, because they charge you by mileage in some cases and you will be liable for any damages.

I'm sure it can be taken out of state just as long as you turn it in to the nearest car rental office from which you got it.

I KNOW BUDGET RENTAL AND ENTERPRISE LET YOU TAKE THE VEHICLES OUT OF STATE. MOST OF THE OTHER SMALL CAR RENTAL COMPANIES DO ALSO LET YOU GO OUT OF STATE. SOME EVEN LET YOU DRIVE FROM ONE STATE TO ANOTHER AND LEAVE THE CAR IN THAT STATE. AT LEAST THE BIGGER COMPANIES DO. YOU MIGHT WANT TO LOOK INTO THE PRICES OF OUT OF STATE TRAVEL. SOME TIMES THEY CHARGE BY THE MILE.

You want unlimited, and you'll have to spend a lot of gas money.
A small sedan can cost you around $30-35/day.
