The triangular theory of love characterizes love in an interpersonal relationship on three different scales: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Different stages and types of love can be explained as different combinations of these three elements; There are seven types of love. A relationship based on a single element is less likely to survive than one based on two or more. It is better to love then be loved if love is not reciprocal.
Combinations of intimacy, passion, and commitment
Liking or friendship: Intimacy only
Infatuation or limerence: Passion only
Empty love: Commitment only
Romantic love: Intimacy and Passion
Companionate love: Intimacy and Commitment
Fatuous love: Passion and Commitment
Consummate love: Intimacy and Passion and Commitment

To love is better. It is always better to give than to receive. That way, you don't lose anything but some time you put in , making someone be a better person for having known you. Love is give and take, but mostly, give.
