There are a lot that combine learning with fun activities; I'd suggest Bob The Builder "Fix It Fun", Blue's Clues "Learning With Blue" and any of the ones from Sesame Street. If you want something that is purely for fun, the Spyro The Dragon ones are nice but the advanced levels could be a little tricky. I've babysat for five year olds that have played the Spyro games and loved them.
Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are both great games to get for younger kids, you might want to check your local video game store to see what they have for the PS2 so you can rent them first, this way you'll know if your son likes them enough to buy them or not.

Try Dragontales game, right level perfect for letting him play alone with out too much parental guidance. I am a 7 year old and he loved it a couple years ago.

Anythin starring Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Clank or Rayman. Kingdom Hearts is sort of a step up from "children" but may work too.
