If there is anything the nonconformist hates worse than a conformist it's another nonconformist who doesn't conform to the prevailing standards of nonconformity. ~Bill Vaughan
I've always loved that quote.
I think conformity is a combination of personality and societal demands. Our society as a whole promotes, supports, and rewards conformity. Society wants us all to toe the line and be the same because we fear the unknown and things we do not understand. Look at the reactions to homosexuality. Its not the status quo, so it must be evil, right? I don't actually think that, but a lot of people do.
Also look at our high schools....how many children are shunned because they don't follow the latest fashion or hate going to football games, or dress in Goth at the prom?
People are accepted when they conform (thus rewarded) and ridiculed for nonconforming (punishment). According to behavioral theories, how do you think most people will act?

The Lord Jesus Christ was non-conformist in that time, which led to His crucifixion. It is not necessarily wrong to be non-conformist. It is not always an effort to gain popularity. To gain attention is a natural effect of being different, but for a purpose . . . to push for some truths and right ways . . . for common good. Actually, it is about concerns for the masses. It is not being-elitist in nature. Who would like to be laughed at, ostracized and disjoined? But if there is zeal to do good, you don t mind the pains from the castigations of the environment. In fact Jesus died happily because the result of His non-conformity and death is good for Mankind. By the way, He is coming back to start everything - - - all over again.

Conformity - joining a movement or emulating a group, from conservative to goth to punk - you conform to that groups values. These people self-define with one or two words "young goth", "male christian" etc.
Nonconformity - You fit in no group. You are your own person. You cannot self define in a few words.

This is a sad reality of life. You spend all your grade school years trying SO HARD to fit in with everybody else, and the rest of your life trying to separate yourself and be unique.
It seems as though conformity is comfortable for the young and immature who haven't yet developed their identity. It's easier to be told who you are than to have the courage to make your own choices about yourself.
It's when a person grows out of their need to be handed answers, or simply finds those answers to be illogical or lacking substance, that they start looking for their own way through life. They may look like most people, but inside they have the courage to speak their mind, the ability to learn from their mistakes, and the desire to choose their own path despite poor odds.
It's like I told a couple kids with colored, spiky hair and tons of metal bits in their wardrobe: "Punk isn't how you look on the outside, it's how you feel on the inside."

I think I can give you some examples
Coloring inside the lines, versus coloring outside the lines equals individuality...
Following the rules, versus not following the rules equals a problem....
Order versus disorder...

non conforming - Daniel refused to stop praying to the one true living God even though he knew he would be thrown into the den of lions - God delivered him and even King Darius became a believer
conforming - everyone that has sex before marriage because "everyone" does it and it doesn't matter - truth is sex is a very special part of the unity between man and woman that is to be kept as holy as it was intended at creation.
"God created sex for us - not us for sex"
