There should be a county extension center serving every county in the US. Depending on the state, sometimes every county has one, in other states one center may serve 2 or 3 counties. Each of the centers in operated by some university in that state that has an agricultural/horticural department. You can usually look it up in the phone book. Call them, make an appointment, and you can take your sample in and some PhD will identify it.
Or you could go to Border's Books and if they don't have on sitting on the shelf order a book for plant identification--they're pretty easy to use.
