I took my car to my mechanic, and he changed the gas cap. Light came on 2 additional times and he attempted to reset it, but it was still on. Finally broken down and took it to the Nissan Dealer. They informed me that it was the emissions canister and that carbon was seeping in. They replaced the canister, caps, and valves for the canaister. The next day, the light came back on, went through this process 3 times now with the Nissan Dealer, and two times with my personal mechanic, (total 5 x's). I am feeling pretty pissed off now, picked up the car this morning from the Nissan Dealer, and guess what.....the light came on again before, I got home. The problem is, I need to get a smog check on my car, to complete the current registration, and I have paid the Nissan Dealer $500.00, any suggestions on what to do?

Save all your reciepts because its either 500 or 700 but if they cant fix it and you have proof you are trying you can get a emmisons waver with proof, not sure whats the law in your state im a inspector in Va. I work at Nissan i can tell you i think its the evap cannistrer and vent valve they go bad alot on pathfinders. but since you said they fixed it makes me wonder if they reset the light correct, i would be pissed off too, wish i could help more.

Check the gas cap to make sure it is good and sealing as it should. He could have put faulty cap on. You will get this code at times if you leave the gas cap loose. So if cap not sealing would also give you code. Also remove positive battery cable from battery for 2 minutes. You will have to reset your radio etc. but this might clear code. It is also possible you have been overfilling your fuel tank. If all of the above does not work check to make sure all valves and canisters are truly new. If so you may have faulty sensor that brings in alarm...

you can pay of a smog tech to pass your car illegally. chances are you'll have a high chance of getting away for it depending on the tech. you can tell DMV that your paying too much for getting your car fixed to pass smog thus will waive your smog check because it couldn't pass and thats your only means of transportation. You can complain to the service manager that you've been back and forth paying so much trying to get the car fixed and all you got was bogus problems not fixing the car. They should discount the rest of your repair until they find what causes the fault....

sounds like you need to buy a code reader for about 80.00 and you can drive with this pluged in to see all of the codes that are generated.. Some codes will reset on their own with out leaving a trace of it in the computor.. As you drive write down the 3 digit code and you should be able to look it up in the book or tell your mechanic what all of the codes were....

what state are you in? If you are in Calif. Go to the BAR. Bureau of Automotive Repair. 310-952-5210 Would like to know what the code is. If it is an evaporation systems code it should not cause a drivability probem.

So WTF are the codes?! You make this sound like it's a diesel motor, "fuel injection pump"? Loss of power like "an air lock"? If this is a gasoline powered motor and it has a distributor take the cap off and inspect it. Nissan distributor caps all crack and carbon trail. The carbon center contact should be spring loaded, they commonly break off and seize flush with the cap causing huge air gaps for the spark to jump.Get us some codes to work with.
