I'm relocating to NJ this month. I know I want to stay within an hour of NYC, but I have no idea where to choose from. I want to be in a safe area, but to be honest, I know nothing about NJ. Please help! Thanks :)

Will you be commuting to Manhattan? How much are you willing to pay for a place to live? How big is your family? What do you prefer: apartment, high-rise, house, condo, duplex, townhouse? I think you need to be more specific.

I'd recommend you to choose anywhere near the Hudson River, such as Fort Lee, Edgewater, and West New York in Bergen and Hudson county. They're nice, safe, and close to Manhattan but ridiculously expensive (for me), like at least $1,500 a month for one bed room apartment.

You may be able to find more affordable rent in Hackensack, Maywood, or Paramus. They're relatively safe and located within an hour of Manhattan.

I second Jamerican Steve. I lived in West Orange, the "Township on The Hill" or at least part of it's on a hill. Nice town, beautiful views of the NYC skyline from Eagle Rock Reservation, Essex Green Mall with a Shoprite supermarket, near Eagle Rock there's another smaller mall. Surrounding townships in addition to Steve's: Millburn, Livingston Verona. Close to 280 to 80. You can take either the NJT bus #71 to/from Newark Penn station, then PATH; or take Coach bus lines straight to Port Authority.

Hoboken or Jersey City, both about 15 to 20 minutes to NYC. You can take NJ transit buses into Port Authority Bus Terminal or PATH train.
