I live in California and would like to live in London for a year and perhaps get a job or do volunteer work. I need to find a place to live and contacts to help me through the process.

If you have gradauted from school within the last months then you can get a BUNAC visa, which will allow you to work and live in the UK for up to 6 months. If you happen to have citizenship from a commonwealth nation or a nation that was colonized by the UK (does not include USA & there is a list on the UK visa site) you can live in the uk for up to 2 years and work there for 1 year. You can also try highly skilled migrant visa. You can do an online questionnaire and if you score enough points you can get a visa that allows you to work there. you need to think about visas and work permits even for voluntary work. Look at the British Embassy website for USA.
