18.6 times 33 devided by 9 is sq yds but you will have to buy more of the roll instead of patching in numerous seams if it works out that way

it depends on the size of carpet an the size of pattern. It is not as easy as dividing by the size and saying that will work. If you go with a 12 ft wide carpet you will need two pieces 12 by 33. You will have a big piece left but because the extra is more than 6 ft there is no way to not have waste. Unless you don't care how many little pieces are used to make it work. So you will actually need 88 yds of carpet. If you have a stairway this is the perfect time to have them redone because you are paying for it anyway. If you find some 13ft 6" carpet you only need a 13ft 6 BY 33 And a 13 ft 6 by 16ft 6 or a total of 13ft 6 by 49ft 6 or 74 sq yds..

The first responder is correct as to the floor area, but if you are buying carpet that is not the number you need: you have to take into account the width of the carpet as it comes off the roll. If the carpet on the roll is 18 feet wide (to pick a number out of the air for an example), then you would need two pieces, each 18.6 long, to do the job with minimal waste. That's a bit over 72 square yards.

18.6 ft *33ft=613.8 ft^2
with 9 ft^2 to the square yard that gives:
613.8/9=68.2 yards
this is the size of the floor, the amount of carpet you will need will be a little more depending on exactly how it is cut and laid
the quick way to estimate these is to notice that 18.6 is about 6 yards and 33 is 11 yards so 6*11= 66 yards will be a quick starting estimate

18.6 x 33 = 613.8
so if this is sq yard and price goes by sq yard its 613.8 x cost =
so price it by sq yard, or measure length by width and ask at the carpet shop.

Don't forget if there's a big pattern such as common with Berber carpets, the installers may have to slide the adjoining piece several inches to line up correctly.

You mulitply 18.6 x 33 and that's 613.8 sq feet and then divide by 3 for sq yds which equals (204.6 sq yds)

Here's what I used to get my figures done. I COULD have done it the old way, slugging it out on a calculator, but this IS the information age so why not use a nifty website for it?
