No. If all passengers inflate their jackets in the plane there
would be no room to move in a rush. Also if you have to jump
from any hight with the jacket inflated, you would get a nasty
bump on landing in the sea.

If we were nose diving at a high rate of speed, either small private plane or large aircraft, I don't think it would matter very much.
If I were in a small plane and we could control it to a glide above the water, I'd jump before impact, then inflate. Might not help but I'd rather take the jump (from 20 feet or so) than the impact.

No! you must wait for the plane to come to a standstill on the water. Then you can inflate your life jacket and exit the plane through the exit doors.

no, as the hostesses always say during the security lecture, only inflate it when you're out of the plane. otherwise you will not only out yourself and other passengers into danger by taking up a lot more space in the aisle than you should but you will also likely break your neck when you hit the water because the life jacket will float up faster than you.

As most of the previous replies have said....you wait until you're outside the plane, or at least on the point of exiting, i.e. as you hit the water. And ALWAYS do as the cabin staff say to do in your interests.
The link below may give you some idea as to what you SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT DO in the event of a landing on water.

nope, as the wee irritating dude blethering at the front of the plane says before take off, you wait until your in the water and then inflate it (oh and don't forget to blow you're little whistle too) like you'd survive the crash anyway...meh, bloody planes...
take care, don't crash... and watch out for snakes...
ttfn ;o)

no. you need to be able to get out of the plane. The life jacket might make you too big to get out, and it is more liekly to tear if it is inflated.

No..! Because it restricts your movements. If your floating to the roof of the plane you are going to struggle to get to the exits.
You'll be forced up-to the roof and stuck their. Asta La Vista as they say in Mexico.....
