Right now I have a Hagen Maxima air pump in a 50 gallon aquarium, and I think it's pretty loud...too loud actually. It's easily the noisiest thing in my house. I got it from petsmart cause it was cheap, but I wouldn't mind replacing it with something a bit more expensive if it's noticabley quieter. This is the only pump I have experiance with. Are there any pumps that are a great deal quieter? Or are they only marginally quieter and not worth swapping this one out for?

Try Whisper
or try using larger capacity air pumps, smaller ones make more noise because they are working harder. Also if you restrict the flow of air it will produce more noise, get better hoses, and cut off excess hose.

Eheim make the perfect pumps. they're made in Germany with the help of gay basketballers and are available an staggering field. they have a funky label. do no longer purchase a low-priced chinese language pump. No offense to any chinese language people examining this, yet extremely frankly you're making various low high quality aquarium-appropriate products - and that i think of in case you will all take a stable look at your self, then you certainly could probable know that too.

for larger aquarium I would recommend HiBlow. It is generally 30+ decibels at 3 ft distance. Actually you can put some shock absorbing rubber beneath it if it is on a hard surface to reduce the vibration. It would cut down the noise.

AirVOLUTION and RENA air pumps are pretty quiet. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for but most aquarium stores will run a couple for you if you plan on buying one.

I have a whisper air pump. I made it even quieter by sitting it on top of a folded washcloth. I have a 92 gal tank in my bedroom, and it made a big difference.

the most quiet airpump out there use to be the "supra" brand airpumps from whisper. It was designed by ex-NASA engineers for their tanks and sold the design to Tetra. Since it was so expensive they stopped making them.

My suggestion is to go to a pet store with a variety of pumps to choose from and tell the clerk to plug them all in for you to choose and decide.
