No, it's psychological pricing - a technique marketers use to make things seem cheaper than they really are.

Look down the sides of the sofa there's usually an odd penny down there and then you will have £5 instead of £4.99.

Well, it's that old psychological theory again. If the price was shown as £5, it would be percieved as such. However, £4.99 is percieved as £4, the pennies are ignored. This has always been one of my bugbears as well, it's about time retailers were honest and said £5,000 instead of £4.999!

Of course and that will never go away ....... I must admit that I even do it when selling something on eBay .... it's natural to want to maximise profit while seemingly keeping the price down. It's strange because I went to Wales recently over the Severn Bridge and the toll was £4.95 but I kept telling everyone it was £5 ..... I suppose I wanted to express my surprise at being charged £5 because that was pretty much what is was and £4.95 at 5p less is certainly no steal!!

yep and i put the penny in the charity pot at the till..i reckon i give away approx £50 quid a year this way alone..and what about when we had the 1/2 pence, that was soooo annoying!!i was a junior soldier(boy soldier to some joined at 15) and one week i was given a 10 shilling note..that would buy me a packet of cigs for the week, and a pint of milk a night..(too young for beer) and get me change for a sat night at the pictures..the following week i was given a 50p peice..which amazingly bought next to nothing..

Yep, cos you feel as you've got more of a bargain when you pay £4.99 instead of £5.00. Oh, the value of that 1p. change, let's see what can we do with that!!!!

Its such a load of bs considering how much small change we get loaded with yet the same people who load us up with it via the £x.99 won't accept it most of the time.Having to pay to get get your small change changed. Just another rip off.

Yeah , then you end up filling little tubs and pots around the home with the pennies and never take them to the bank. I'm wading through my place as we speak !
