Sports Card Collectors - do you just chase inserts or are you set builders?

Question

It seems to me sports card collectors just bust packs for insert cards. Set Building is gone, specially since you can buy a completed set direct from manufacuter. Where do all the non-insert cards go?

I built total sets that include inserts but have had the problem of packages being opened.Now I just collect favorite athletes or personalities the attemp to get others autographed.
