If you are just going to visit another country you need a passport only, and you get that at your county clerks office or government center. visas are if you are staying in the country for 6 or more months.

No, it's not correct. Some countries require Visas for any kind of visit - it depends on what country you're going to and what country you're coming from. Some countries may only require a Visa if you're going for longer than 6 months (like Jamaica), but some require one even if you're only there for one day.

No, it is not correct! It depends on a country that you are visiting, and it also depends what you citizenship is.
For example, I am from Kyrgyzstan, and I can be in Turkey without a visa only 2 months. Check http://travel.state.gov/,it has most up to date info on travel for American citizens. ;) Good luck!

You can also apply for a passport at the Post Office. Otherwise, yes, this sounds right.
