because britain's entire history in Ireland was one of colonization, exploitation, subjugation, taking of the land, treating the native population as less than human. who'd want to be a part of that?

Because back in the day Britain along with the other English states, thought of Ireland as a poor country. And because of this they felt that Irish people were beneath them. The Irish were used as slaves and made to other demeaning jobs for the British along with the English. That's why the people of Ireland formed the IRA also know as the Irish Republican Army. The IRA fought against the Brit's and stuck up for their people and country, but the British thought of them as terrorist.

Well, the folks in Vietnam aren't terribly pleased when asked to speak French, and the Koreans still have a chip on their shoulders about Japan's invasion and enslavement of their ppl. It's called collective memory. They still remember, as a culture, that the British were once their rulers, and still own a chunk of IRISH land. Americans would get mad if some old-fasioned Imperialist Briton called the US "subjects of the Crown", too.

It's because that the Irish have a history of fighting with the historically brutal English. You can't erase the fact that it happened but you can get everyone together in a Pub and enjoy a Guinness or two.

Because we want our own identity,we want our own country and independence. The problem we have now is that more and more decisions are being made by and for all EEC states so individual countries identities are being eroded slowly but surely.
History has made us what we are today and we don't want to go back !
