I recently started using in-ear headphones. I noticed that on my CD player even songs played at the lowest volume level (1 out of 25) seemed really loud--I could hear the music softly when I held the earphones an inch from my ears. I switched back to headphones and now the music needs to be on three to be audible, but it doesn't pulse anymore like it's too loud. Anyway, this led me to wonder if earphones can do any damage to my hearing. Should I stick with headphones, or does it even make a difference?

If either one is too loud you can very easily damage your ears permanently. When people claim that they got used to loud music it's not true. The reason it's not so loud to them anymore (because they got "used to it") is actually a good indication that they have damaged their hearing. Once it's damaged, it's permanent. Anytime it seems too loud to you, turn it down. It's ok not to be cool and protect your ears. You will be very glad you did when you get older. I was macho and now at 64 I'm paying the price.

Any headphones can damage your hearing it all depends on how long you listen to it and how loud it is.

Yeah earphones that go into your eyes are bad for you if it's really like loud because it can damage your ear drums. Since you seem to be having trouble with both kinds, try a different brands/kinds or try a different cd player.
