In demography, CDR is the abbreviation for Crude Death Rate. CDR for any grouping of people is the number of deaths per year divided by the total population and multiplied by 1,000.

If two deaths occur in a population of 100, then divide 100 into 2 to get 0.02. Multiply that by 1,000 and you get a CDR of 20.

It can be stated as 20 per thousand existing population or a percentile CDR of 2%.

Today, in the U.S., the CDR is 6, or 6/10th of 1 percent.
