For the past couple of months, my lips have been swollen and red. They peel every few days. Today I woke up and I looked like I had botox injections. I asked my doctor, and he said they're just chapped, but I don't think that's it. Any ideas??

If it wasn't so uncomfortable, it'd be kinda cool. I slightly resemble Angelina Jolie!

You need to see a dermatologist. I had a similar problem about 5 years ago. He gave me an injection, a special lip creme and oral medication. My lips were improved in 24 hours and totally healed in about 2 weeks. I had to continue to take the meds for another 2 weeks to keep it from coming back. It was a viral infection but my regular doctor didn't know how to treat it.

Are you using a new lipstick? are you constantly using some kind of chap stick? both those can cause a contact dermatitis. Don't put anything on your lips except a little unscented petroleum jelly at bed time, for a week or so, and see if that helps.Overuse of any product can cause symptoms you are trying to get rid of.

Have you been doing some "heavy" smooching? That will make them swell some. Chapped lips usuallly happen in cold weather not hot. Keep them lubricated with chapstick and if that doesn't help in a few days, find another doctor. Pops

have you used any new lip treatments like chapstick or lipstick right when this started?
think back to anything new you used around the time this started.
Any new meds?
Bee stings?
You have to think back and sift through anything different you used or came into contact with.
Are you kissing someone who might have something you are allergic to on his lips?
Hard to tell without seeing it.

As always, if you start having breathing problems you need to call 911 immediately.

I'm guessing that you're having a reaction to something. Are you taking any meds or eating or drinking anything new?

My son had a similar reaction to the dye in NuGrape. Think about what kind of artificial flavors or colors you're using.

I think it may be an allergy. Do you drink a lot of drinks containing citric acid? It is used as a preservative in many juices and fruity deserts too. My niece is also highly allergic to mango and her lips swell from it.

umm.. well i think they are just chapped. don't peel any more skin off it'll just get worse. put some chap-stick or lip-gloss on for the next few days. and whatever you do, DO NOT lick it! that makes it even worse.

Chances are, you are allergic to Lanolin. it's a common ingredient in most lip and hand products. If the product you are using contains it, discontinue it's use and switch to a non lanolin based product.

You know what you could have an abscese. It's like a bacterial infection. Go to the doctors and have them take a look at it. before it gets worse.

Did the doctor pay you to come to his office or did you pay him? Get another doctor. Some of them are so full of crap it's sickening. They are bogged down my insurance companies and HMO's. They do not have time for US! So get another opinion. YOU know yourself better than your doctor. So go by what you know.
