Its really starting to get to me. Does anybody know why old people especially walk down the road, when there'e a perfectly decent pavement? My Mum says its because of cars parked on the pavement, but I've seen them do it when there isn't a car in sight!
Any silver surfers out there to answer my question?

Sorry forgot about you yanks out there, in little ole quaint england as you call it, we have limited parking and narrower streets. So people park half on the sidewalk/pavement. to allow access through the road, yes its technically illegal, but police don't usually enforce the law unless its causing an obstruction. Oh and daft, means stupid (check a dictionary out)

It's so they don't trip on the kerbs, when they cross small side streets.
Don't forget most of them have poor eyesight and poor balance.
Plus they are easily injured, and take much longer to heal.

Not quite a silver surfer I hope but moving that way.
My experience of old people I have and still know start too get a little accident pron e as they get older. I dont know what the real cause is but my theory is it is coordination along with a tendency not to be focused on what they are doing.
When they fall over they tend be frailer and hurt more than they did when they were in their youth. It scares them where some of us may just be a little embarrassed with minor injuries it becomes a big psychological thing
Well to answer your question they worry about tripping up on the uneven and cracked paving stones, the road is smother.
There finished!

it is a very dangerous world out there and old people are a prime target.
I think they walk on the road to avoid being jumped on from concealed entrances that they may not have seen.
Or they may be from a mining background.. Miners walked down the middle of the road home to avoid getting coaldust on the pavements outside their neighbours houses.
In the winter I walk on the road because the council dont grit the pavements anymore.

I've never noticed older people walking in the road rather than on the pavement. Maybe the ones who live near me are just more sensible.

cuz they are old and cuz they can!
LOL probably the same reason that they buy 80 thousand dollar sports cars and only drive 25 miles per hour! The same reason that they will stand at a check out and dig through pockets or purses saying that they have the 97 cents thereby stopping up the line versus just accepting 3 cents change?

The answer to this is like why do they climb a mountain? Because it's there. also your'e not likely to bump into people on the road. Also theres none of that stepping down and then up again as on pavement.

I agree with the theory about having to go up and down to walk on the pavement, whereas the street is flat (hopefully!).
At one time I was taking care of my grandmother, who was in her late nineties at the time. Her eye-sight was not very good, but she enjoyed getting out. We used to have to walk in a town where the pavements were very high off the road, and also went down for shop entrances and then up again. While holding my two-year-old in one arm, holding Granny with the other, and shepherding my four-year-old in front of me, my entire conversation consisted of "up" , "down now", "up again" "down"!!
At least motorists all stopped for me to cross the road with all my charges!
Hey Carolina girl - daft means crazy, mad etc. You can always find out things like that on google eg: "daft definition"

Maybe their eye sight isnt the best and they don't realize cause of their poor vision they are walking in the middle of a road and not on pavement.

Many old people who walk down the roads are usually scared of dark areas where they could be attacked. The elederly are very vunerable.
Sometimes they may be senile which is a shame, and they walk down the road not really sure of what they are actually doing

Probably because they have arthritis in their knees and stepping up and down the curb on to and off the pavement places additional load on the knees - the equivalent of 7 stone of load for every stone of body weight.
