Gnats is a pretty generic term. If they are fruit flies having some now and then is normal.
Do you have houseplants? Many times if you overwater houseplants either shore flies or fungus gnats will show up. The best way to control them is let the root balls of the houseplants dry out between waterings. The larvae are in the soil and the plant can do without water better that the larvae can. After you let it dry out 2 or 3 times that should kill the larvae. Once they are gone don't overwater in the future.

The biggest cause is bananas, especially if you bag them at the store in one of those plastic bags--gnats are very common on them and if you pick up a bunch and bag it, you are likely bagging a few gnats. Then when you get home, and take the bananas out, the gnats are welcomed into your home as well. Even not bagging the bananas at the store can still result in some gnats coming in with them. Plus I think they attract all of the gnats in the neighborhood, and come in the windows and doors readily.

Climate. Most of your home and garden stores carry a product called Nat Be Gone. It's not very expensive and works well. They will tell you that before you treat the concerned areas to be sure and tarp all yard and vegetation. Home Depot carries a 2mil (36in.X100ft) plastic that you will need. Be sure and have a professional toxic disposal company remove the covering, shop around you can get quotes anywhere from 3500 up to 8000 dollars. Good luck.

Gnats have nothing to do with the South. Gnats nest in warm moist areas, preferrably wood, like tree bark, unsealed windows and doors etc., in all area of the world.
Keeping area of your yard clean of leaves, decaying wood, piles of junk etc can help reduce the gnat problem. Spraying of trees and shrubs will not kill the gnats, but can make their nesting areas unsavory and drive them to the neighbors yard.
Caulking around Doors and Windows, inside and outside, will prevent the wood framing from being damp and providing a good nesting place.
Some types of gnats like to lay their eggs in the grease build up in your kitchen drain. This can be reduced by wiping skillets with a paper towel prior to washing. Using a good grease cutting detergent also helps. If you notice gnats flying around a kitchen drain then replace the downpipe from the sink to the P-Trap.

It doesn't take much for gnats to come into your house. If you buy fresh fruit and vegies they can come in that way.Even from a grocery store or out door market. They will rest {or nest} on fredsh produce and then become active later and you will find them inside.

If you have a basement they can come from the sewer. They are not necessarily fruit flies.. Hot shot has a thing that looks like an air freshener. They last a long time. You wont see them for quite sometime. They usually can be found at walmart or a hardware store.. But it works GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe her house is clean but untidy. But to me as long as the surfaces are bleached polished etc, the bathroom is immaculate, and kitchen areas clean, I don't mind if the kids leave toys out. or a bit of clutter.
