the drain hose might be clogged with lint or something, call a service person out to look at it, that will be cheaper than a buying new one

Unplug the electrical cord. Take the cover off the back of the machine.
There is a small blue or white plastic gizmo attached to the drain hose (it's called the Pump), make sure the two wires with connectors are attached. It also has a screen in it. Remove the drain hose, clean the screen, and replace. The hose attached to the big tub has a heavy duty clamp, but it can be removed, and checked for an obstruction.
If that doesn't work, you may need a new Pump or Timer. The Pump is about thirty bucks. The Timer is about a hundred bucks.

If its a kenmore or whirlpool, its probably a broken wire to a solonoid on the very bottom of the tub. You will have to strip the wire back starting from the solonoid. It will usually break within the first few inches from the solonoid.

SOMETHING IS STUCK OVER THE DRAIN....BABY ITEMS OR STOCKINGS OR RUBBER BACKED ITEMS TEND TO GO OVER THE TOP OF THE TUB AND GET STUCK OVER THE DRAIN..IF YOU WANT TO FIX IT YOURSEL........FIRST DISCONNECT IT........GET A WIDE ENDED SCREWDRIVER AND PRY UP THE WHOLE TOP....YOU CAN THEN PUT YOUR HAND DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FULL TUB OF WATER ON THE OUTSIDE OF IT....YOU WILL CATCH SOMETHING STILL STICKING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH OR OVER ON THE SIDE THAT IS BLOCKING THE DRAIN SPOT......IVE DONE IT SEVERAL TIMES...USUALLY PLASTIC OR PLASTIC LINED BABY PANTS.....ITS EXPENSIVE TO GET THE GUY SO TRY IT...OK GOOD LUCK

Ours did that once- the draining tube was blocked. . . or had come undone- something like that!

It needs to be fixed when that happens. Or if it's old, get a new one.
