Simply because we all saw a little of ourselves in him. I mean he could be considerate and compassionate as well as naive and, well, a bit over zealous. C'mon, admit it!

Everybody knows someone like Barney. He's sweet and foolish, and full of himself. I think the character's popularity had a lot to do with Don Knott's regular appearances on The Steve Allen Show. Everyone already recognized him from the "Man in the Street" interviews Steve would do with the same 3 guys. Tom Poston was one and Louie Nye was another and Don Knotts, who played a guy who was a nervous, shaking wreck. He was great.

He was very funny. Everyone from small towns knew a "Barney Fife" that was in the police precinct. A very kind, yet firm man who tried to be tough and yet you could get away with anything from him. Barney was cool and kind of nerve racking, but you had to love him for his devotion to make a positive difference.

He was funny, and he was really human. I think everyone could relate a little to his ambition blunted in a small town, and wanting to be more than he was. And everybody knows a "Barney Fife" no matter where you live, so he resonated with people.
I loved that he had to carry that one bullet around with him in his pocket-- he couldn't carry around a loaded gun.

I think he tried to be the tough lawman, but in reality, he was
scared of his own shadow and harmless. He was comfortable handling Otis the drunk, and Ernest T. Bass, but with anybody else, he was lost w/o Andy. Good ol' "One Bullet Barney"

The sidekick was always cooler, even if he wasn't cool. Don Knotts career was alot more productive than Andy Griffith's.
