A Long Way Down, by Nick Hornby.
or
Life of Pi, by Yann Martel
both great books about life - the first about a group of people who meet as they're all about to commit suicide, and become friends, and the second about a boy on a lifeboat with a tiger.

Once I read Silas Marner, my life changed. It is about karma and things that come and go in your life and how those things have the ability to change you or make you bitter. As a supplement to the book, see the Steve Martin movie, "A Simple Twist of Fate."
