I assume this is a DSL or Cable modem? Start by plugging in the modem and hooking the phone or cable to it. Then plug in a network cable to the modem and plug the other end into the WAN or Internet port on the router. From the router (if it is wired) plug in a network cable from the port marked 1 on the router to the laptops LAN port.

Depends what it is. If it is just a router it will have a network port that says LAN that goes to the laptop's network port. It should also have one that says WAN which goes to your modem (Cable or ADSL)
If it is a Modem/Router, it should just have a LAN connection that goes to the laptop and one that goes to the phone line. The phone line one should be smaller than the LAN one if you look closely.
If has say a 4 port switch built in, then it doesn't Matter which of the LAN ports you plug into your laptop.
Message me if this doesn't help.

Lots of different answers here. Typically, laptops like to be wireless so it's unusual, unless you're using dialup, to attach a router to the laptop. Typically, routers are attached to a desktop and laptops access the wireless signal.
You should have ports on your laptop to attach directly by your NIC card, or phone line via your modem. If you're truly trying to 'hardwire' yourself to a router, the cable coming in from the wall would go into the router - and then out to your computer.

The ethernet jack for the cable from the router looks a lot like the modem jack. The difference is the ethernet jack has 8 conductors (gold strips), versus 4 for the modem jack.

Whatever wire that is connected to the modem (that can be plugged straight into the computer) goes to the UPLINK part on the router.
