Who thinks it's illegal to drive barefoot?
I started driving barefoot when, on a rainy day when my shoes were wet and I was wearing high-heels, my foot slipped forwards off the clutch pedal and the heel of my shoe dug into the carpet. so that the pedal was neatly placed between the sole and heel of my shoe. My husband didn't like my driving barefoot because he figured I couldn't brake efficiently.
As to flip flops probably better to flip them off! There used to be driving shoes which had a special tread on the back of the heel.
As far as I know it's not illegal. It only becomes illegal when, after an incident, it can be proved that you did not have proper control over the vehicle.

Illegal no. Safe shoe for driving? No. And if you work as a driver for a living, don't even consider wearing flip flops for work. You will lose work time for at least the time it takes to go change shoes to a whole work day to possibly the job for being so stupid.
If you wear them to take your drivers test it is not going to be in your favor either.

Everybody knows it's illegal to drive barefoot, right? Guess what? Wrong. There is no law in any state that mandates what a driver has to wear. Then why do we all think that? Because it will be listed as a cause if you are in an accident. But then again, so will talking on the cell phone.

I understand your question, b/c driving in flip flops is so awkward and dangerous that maybe it should, in fact, be illegal!
Reminds me... Last year my best friend and I were on our way to this Halloween party and she was wearing those very high heels (along with her Aaliyah-style vampire costume)... Well eventually she had no choice and she ended up driving barefoot... now *that* was awkward LOL

Well, some localities have laws that make it illegal to drive barefoot, so I guess it's not impossible that some areas might have laws against driving in flip flops, though I think that would be a pretty stupid law. I might be overlooking something, though.

They have yet to restrict our personal freedom as far as what foot wear we can use while driving but i am sure that day may come eventually. So go crazy where flip flops, or better yet no shoes at all.
